Chapter 12: Beyond European Security: Europe, the United States, and NATO
Beyond European Security: Europe, the United States, and NATO
Authors: Jeffrey Simon and Sean Kay
European security after World War II was provided by the foundation of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in 1949. This transatlantic military alliance was framed on the global structure of the Cold War. After the demise of the Soviet Union, an ongoing process of redefining NATO ‘s environment and tasks began. Threats have changed, as have strategy perceptions. Also NATO is no longer the only supplier of security cooperatioon, as the EU seeks a bigger role in the field and even the private sector seems to have discovered this market. The first set of links listed below are for the EU and NATO web sites, undoubtedly the best places to start any research regarding security cooperation in the post-Cold War world. Next to that, you will find links to several former and current missions of both NATO as well as the EU. Under the denominator ‘other links' you will find links to the authors webpages, to relevant research institutes, databases, and to some private companies in the field.
