Rebekah Lipsky | Seattle, USA

M.A. Candidate (BC10)

Rebekah Lipsky is a West Coast native with Eastern European roots and an interest in post-Soviet security studies. An honors graduate of the University of California at Los Angeles, Rebekah gave up a successful career in public relations to study international affairs.

"I am fascinated by security studies because it is at the crossroads of all major policy issues: the environment, health care, education, energy-they all affect and are affected by national and global security concerns," Rebekah says.

Rebekah's undergraduate degree in communication studies and interest in the French language led to a year abroad in Paris and an internship in Cameroon. After graduation, she began a career in public relations, working on film campaigns and managing high-profile Hollywood events. Rebekah says, however, that politics always remained in the back of her mind, and she found the trajectory of U.S. foreign policy disturbing.

"In my future career, I hope to promote a reasoned approach to security issues, helping to protect our nation through thoughtful and inclusive foreign policy," she says.

Most recently, her activism and growing concern for global affairs compelled her to quit Hollywood and return to her hometown of Seattle, Wash., as Deputy New Media Director for the Obama campaign.

Rebekah is now studying Russian and focusing on the expansion and redefinition of NATO in the post-Soviet era.

"I quit a prospering career in public relations because I am passionate about international affairs. Rather than lamenting the state of U.S. foreign policy, I want to dedicate my career to changing it," Rebekah says.
