 Alexis Below | Berlin, Germany
M.A. Candidate (BC10) | Steven Muller and Jill McGovern Fellowship recipient
An abiding interest in international relations developed in high school inevitably led Alexis Below to the Bologna Center. During the intervening years, he burnished his academic credentials by analyzing and writing on a variety of topics, including the institutional transformation of NATO in the context of the Afghanistan war, the U.S. missile defense program, international terrorism, transitional justice, human development in the Arab world and state-building in Afghanistan.
A graduate of the Dresden University of Technology with a degree in international relations, Alexis gained practical experience through participation and leadership skills as a member of the Dresden Working Group on Foreign and Security Policy and as head of the university's Model UN. He led the Dresden delegation to the Harvard World Model UN in Geneva, Switzerland, and the following year, to Puebla, Mexico.
His internships also reinforced his knowledge of world affairs. Alexis served as an editorial assistant at WeltTrends, a journal for international politics in Potsdam, Germany, and worked at a company for cultural exchange in Quito, Ecuador. He also spent a semester abroad at Peking University, where he studied China's politics and economy. "This experience gave me the opportunity to study not only a major power in the international system but also to experience one of the most fascinating transformational societies in the world."
Just before coming to SAIS, Alexis completed a three-month internship at the Directorate for Crisis Prevention and Peacebuilding with the German Federal Foreign Office in Berlin.
At SAIS, Alexis plans to concentrate in Conflict Management. Although he is still unsure if he will land in the public or private sector, Alexis is excited about the opportunities provided in Bologna and Washington, D.C. "I am confident that the master's degree from SAIS will provide me with skills and knowledge valuable for any career of my choice."
Languages: Fluent in English and Spanish with a basic knowledge of Chinese
