Sara Carmen Taylor | London, England and Teruel, Spain
M.A. Candidate (BC10)
Sara Taylor comes to SAIS with nearly a decade of experience in corporate law and banking and extensive international exposure both as a student and an employee. A dual United Kingdom and Spanish citizen, Sara was educated at international schools in several European countries before finishing school in Paris. Her exposure to different cultures from a young age gave her a natural interest in international issues.
An honors graduate from Oxford University, Sara was most recently with the Royal Bank of Scotland, and her experience in banking and as a solicitor placed her on the fast track to succeed in the private sector. She felt a different call, however, and set her sights on the field of international development.
"I had reached a stage in my career where I was taking on increasing responsibility but I was keen to develop my leadership potential in a different direction, by working on projects that create opportunities for people in developing countries." Her interest now, she says, lies in the area of development finance, citing the IFC or the World Bank as providers of finance that might not otherwise be available, where transactions not only produce economic returns but also strive for broader social and environmental results.
Sara believes the study and practice of international relations is more important now than ever. "We face a number of serious challenges, from the current economic downturn to more persistent issues such as climate change, poverty and human rights." That's the reason, she says, that she chose SAIS.
"The SAIS program allows me to build on my studies and redirect my career to a more international sphere. Its focus on economics is fundamental to understanding global issues and the role of international institutions."
Sara looks forward to experiencing the international environment that the student body at the Bologna Center provides. "Given my background, I have no doubt that I will feel at home in this vibrant and stimulating community."
