U.S. Citizens and permanent residents
Financial aid for U.S. citizens and permanent U.S. residents who wish to attend the Bologna Center is administered by SAIS in Washington. Amounts vary depending upon the financial need of the candidate and funds available. The application procedure and requirements for financial assistance are the same as those for students wishing to attend SAIS in Washington, DC.
Non U.S. citizens
The Bologna Center administers financial aid and fellowships for non-U.S. citizens who wish to study in Bologna. The Center allocates part of its annual budget to student financial aid. Awards are made on an annual basis. The financial aid available is limited and is generally distributed in the form of partial tuition grants to students who demonstrate outstanding academic merit and financial need. The Center also administers a number of awards (partial and full-tuition fellowships) on behalf of donor organizations.
Candidates for admission who wish to be considered for any of the financial aid provided by the Bologna Center or administered jointly by the Bologna Center and donor organizations must submit the appropriate form provided in the application packet. The Bologna Center advises candidates seeking financial assistance not to rely solely on the center for possible support. They should begin early to seek alternative sources of funding from home government agencies, foundations and lending institutions. Lists of resources are normally available in grants registers in university libraries and on the internet.
Limited financial assistance, based on academic merit and demonstrated financial need, is available for non-U.S. students to continue their studies for a second year in Washington or at the Bologna Center. A few fellowships are also available for non-U.S. students to attend the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. Application forms are provided toward the end of the first semester in Bologna.
Furthermore, students who wish to continue their studies for a second year should begin searching for alternative sources of funding for the second year immediately after being admitted to the Bologna Center. Waiting until after enrolling at the center may cause applicants to miss the deadlines of many potential sources of financial aid, some of which require that applications be submitted one year in advance.
Refund of tuition payments
A partial refund of tuition payments may be made to students who withdraw of their own accord from the Bologna Center under the following schedule: within the first week of classes, 90%; within the second week, 80% plus a 10% reduction each week thereafter up to the eighth week when no refund will be given. These percentages are calculated based on the date that the student submits a written statement of withdrawal to the director.
