Candidates for the M.A. and MAIA degrees concentrate in two examination fields, one of which must be in international economics. The second field is chosen by the student at the beginning of the program. Detailed information on the fields offered for the M.A. and MAIA is indicated under the degree program information.

Enrollment in the Bologna Center is most appropriate for M.A. students selecting European Studies, International Relations or American Foreign Policy as a second field of concentration. Those who intend to choose African Studies, Latin American Studies (Western Hemisphere Program), Middle East Studies, or International Development as second fields are welcome in Bologna, but they will have to concentrate most courses in these fields during their second year in Washington. Foreign language requirements should be considered carefully. Candidates for the M.A. should select their second fields of concentration and design their courses of study only after carefully reviewing the requirements and consulting with faculty advisers in Bologna and field directors in Washington.
