M.A. candidates concentrate in two programs, one of which must be in international economics. The second program is chosen by the student either during the application process (see International Development) or at the beginning of their studies. Most M.A. concentrations require completion of approximately six courses in the program, leaving space for elective courses over the two years of study. Faculty advisors are available to assist students with their choice of program and courses during orientation and throughout their studies.
Approximately one-half of all SAIS M.A. candidates spend their first year at the SAIS Bologna Center. Although courses are offered in virtually all areas at the Bologna Center, students planning to concentrate in an area requiring proficiency in one of the Asian languages (which are not offered in Bologna) are required to obtain permission from the Asia Studies program to attend Bologna and are normally discouraged from doing so. Students planning to pursue any other concentration are welcome to attend the Bologna Center, and those interested in European Studies are strongly encouraged to spend their first year in Bologna.
